China's Gotion High-Tech might have stolen a march on the rest of the world, including homegrown rival CATL, with the development of a car battery that can go from zero to 80 percent charge in less than 10 minutes.
At the company's 13th Technology Conference, it unveiled two fast-charging batteries and a new all-solid-state battery technology, including a 5C ultra-fast charging battery that the company said was ready for immediate mass production.
The fast-charging battery, dubbed 'G-Current', is designed with 5C super-fast charging technology that enables it to reach 80 percent charge with 9.8 minutes and 90 percent charge in 15 minutes. Gotion said the solution was capable of being deployed across the entire range of battery applications, whether for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) or hybrids, and cover multiple battery chemistries such as LFP, LMFP, and NCM.
Cao Yong, Vice President of the Engineering R&D Institute of Gotion High-tech, said at the conference that the release of G-Current batteries signifies mass production.
Separately, the company also showcased a high-nickel, NCM-based cylindrical battery 'Stellary' and an all-solid-state battery technology.
The Stellary battery uses Gotion's self-developed second-generation silicon-carbon material and fast-charging electrolyte, enabling ultra-fast charging that takes batteries from 10 percent to 70 percent charge in just nine minutes.
Battery packs equipped with this cell can provide a 350 km range after charging for five minutes and 600 km range after charging for 10 minutes, the company said.
In a release, Gotion claimed the Stellary Battery Pack had a "unique structural design" that allowed it to 70 percent of the heat outside the pack within three seconds, ensuring maximum-speed cooling under extreme conditions. The battery is also equipped with multi-faceted effective cooling technology, improving its safety and reliability.
Gotion said it would produce the Stellary battery at its Gen7 factory, which would help achieve a 50 percent reduction in manufacturing costs.
Gotion also presented a solid-state battery technology called the Gemstone battery, which incorporates groundbreaking all-solid-state technology.
The Gemstone battery boasts an energy density of 350 Wh/kg, over 40 percent more than mainstream NCM batteries, providing a fillip to EVs through increased range and better energy efficiency. Gotion announced that Gemstone had also successfully passed the 200-degree hot box test at one go, marking a significant advancement in battery technology safety.
