US-based fuel cell and FCEV developer Hyzon Motors has announced the successful completion and factory acceptance testing of the first nine single-stack 200 kW Fuel Cell System (FCS) for transport applications at its production and innovation center in Bolingbrook, Illinois.
The company claims that innovative fuel cell system will go into production and commercialization in 2024. The latest development follows the commissioning of Hyzon's proprietary, automated roll-to-roll Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) production line at the Bolingbrook facility. This also includes in-line inspection and the installation of its single cell and fully automated fuel cell stack manufacturing lines.
The Progression of the latest batch (B-samples) of 200kW FCS validates the design and development for the final tooling and production of C-samples and the eventual commercialization of the FCS, according to the manufacturer.

"Our goal is to accelerate the clean energy transition by providing hydrogen fuel cells to power zero-emission mobility," said Parker Meeks, Hyzon's Chief Executive Officer. "In our view, this milestone reflects Hyzon's years of leadership in developing hydrogen fuel cell technology, and this important step toward full-scale 200kW FCS production demonstrates exciting progress toward the commercialization of our single stack design."
Hyzon's single-stack 200 kW FCS claims significant advantages relative to current industry standards. While most FCEV suppliers achieve 200 kW output by coupling two ~110kW FCSs, the company has developed proprietary engineering enabling 200 kW output from a single stack.
This results in about 20 percent increase in miles per kilogram of hydrogen, as against the 120 kW FCS, thereby improving the truck's total cost ownership (TCO) and requiring less maintenance.
Further, the system is about 30 percent smaller in volume and weight, along with 25 percent lower cost in development, according to the developer.
