India announces ₹11,000 crore incentives over two years to promote adoption of electric vehicles

The Government of India has approved an ₹11,000 crore scheme to accelerate adoption of electric mobility over the next two years. 

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved a proposal made by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) for implementation of 'PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme', the Press Information Bureau announced.

The scheme's primary objective is to expedite the adoption of electric vehicles by providing upfront incentives for their purchase, as well as by facilitating the establishment of essential charging infrastructure for EVs. The scheme aims to promote EVs to reduce the environmental impact of transportation and improve air quality, the press release said. The major components of the scheme were revealed as:
