Salgenx has announced the launch of a 3,000 KWh zinc chloride saltwater battery, designed specifically for low-cost, large-scale energy storage and available housed in a standard 40-foot high cube shipping container.
In its release, Salgenx noted that at the heart of the new battery system is an innovative rolled layer design that enhances performance and reliability. "Unlike traditional flat-sheet batteries, the Salgenx solution utilizes separated, rolled layers of anode and cathode materials. This unique design allows the battery to accommodate the natural expansion of zinc during the charging process, thereby preventing short circuits and extending the battery's operational life," the company said.
The company noted that the battery was ideally suited for grid-scale applications including storage of renewable energy, peak shaving, load leveling, and backup power.
Salgenx, a division of Infinity Turbine, aims to develop innovative and sustainable energy storage solutions and explores cutting-edge renewable materials and methods to meet demand for renewable energy storage.
The company believes saltwater batteries provide a safe, non-toxic, and cost-effective alternative to traditional lithium-based energy storage systems. In its release, it listed a number of advantages over lithium-ion batteries including:
• Safety and Reliability: Salgenx claims to have resolved the common issue of dendrite formation in zinc-based batteries, thus "significantly" reducing the risk of short circuits.
• Enhanced Safety: Unlike lithium-based batteries, Salgenx's system is inherently non-flammable, the company pointed out.
• Scalable and Flexible: The 3,000 KWh battery system is housed in a 40-foot shipping container, making for easy integration into existing grid infrastructures. The battery can be quickly deployed and scaled up to meet varying energy demands, the company noted.
