Stellantis to invest €103 mn to support new EV platform
Stellantis announced it would invest €103 million to increase production capacity of electric drive modules (EDMs) at its Szentgotthard plant, Hungary. The new capacity is expected to come onstream in late 2026.
The Szentgotthard-produced EDMs will be used in vehicles built on Stellantis' upcoming battery EV-centric platform, dubbed STLA. At present, the plant builds 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder and 1.6-liter four-cylinder internal combustion engines for use across Stellantis brand such as Fiat, Peugeot and Citroen.
In a release, the company said EDM production at Szentgotthard would be housed in existing plant buildings. Employees will undergo upskilling training to support the machining and assembly requirements of EDM production, including machining of certain key components and final assembly and testing of the company's 3-in-1 EDMs that combine the electric motor, reduction gearset and inverter all into a single unit.
Stellantis is already manufacturing EDMs at Tremery-Metz, France, and Kokomo, Indiana, USA. Further, the company's Mirafiori complex in Italy is increasing production of next-generation electrified dual-clutch transmissions (eDCTs) from this year for use in Stellantis hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Stellantis is spending more than €50 billion over the next decade as part of the company's Dare Forward 2030 targets: it plans to achieve a 100 percent battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales mix for passenger cars in Europe and 50 percent passenger car and light-duty truck BEV sales mix in the US by 2030.
Towards this, the company is securing approximately 400 GWh of battery capacity, and setting up six battery manufacturing plants aross North America and Europe.
Stellantis is also seeking to become a net zero company by 2038, all scopes included, with compensation of remaining emissions to be in single-digit percentages (1-9 percent). The comapany has stated it is on track to achieve this goal.
