Chinese battery tech firm SVOLT Energy Technology Company Limited recently unveiled the third-generation of its cell-to-pack solutions called "Dragon Armor" at the 3rd SVOLT Battery Day held on 15th of December this year.
The company claims to have used cutting-edge technologies to raise the overall safety of the car battery to a higher level. As a system solution that enables both a high level of safety and a long range, the battery can realize a range of up to 800 km for e-vehicles in LFP applications, it adds.
According to SVOLT, the biggest safety risk of battery packs mainly comes from thermal runaway of individual cells. To address this, the company has used an innovative design consisting of a short-blade cell with a degassing valve at the bottom, thus creating a thermal-electrical separation.
The manufacturer states that this design isolates the electrical contact area from the degassing, and reduces the likelihood of component failure due to a high-voltage arc or ignition. If a fire occurs in a single cell, it is prevented from spreading to the entire pack.
Further, the design also facilitates vehicle integration and comprehensively improves the safety level from a single unit to the entire system.
In terms of performance, the Dragon Armor battery LFP cell and pack is said to have higher energy density, with pack density in the overall system as high as 76 percent, thus translating to higher range.
In addition, the new battery has other performance advantages. For instance, the NCM chemistry supports 4C fast charging and expandable CTC, is compatible with various chemistry systems, and can be used in a variety of applications from subcompact to mid-size cars.
SVOLT has said that the pre-orders for Dragon Armor batteries has already began since mid-December, and their installation in new vehicle models will be realized in 2023.
The battery company is fast expanding its global footprint. In September this year, the SVOLT announced its plan to establish its second cell manufacturing plant in Brandenburg, Germany, to serve the European market, with the first overseas plant already operational in Heusweiler, Saarland.
