Italian luxury automaker Lamborghini has announced that it will launch its first hybrid series production car by 2023 and electrify the entire range by end of 2024.
Earlier this week, Lamborghini presented the company's roadmap to decarbonization, taking a complete 360-degree approach encompassing future Lamborghini models to the Sant'Agata Bolognese site, from the production lines to the offices. The automaker has committed more than $1.5 billion euros for this transition over the next four years -- the largest investment to date in Lamborghini's history.
"Lamborghini's electrification plan is a newly-plotted course, necessary in the context of a radically changing world, where we want to make our contribution by continuing to reduce environmental impact through concrete projects," said Stephan Winkelmann, President, and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.
According to the official statement released by the company, Lamborghini's roadmap will comprise of three phases:
I. Celebrating the combustion engine (2021-2022): During this phase, the automaker will develop combustion engines versions that pay tribute to the company's history and iconic products past and present. The company announced that Sián, the most recently unveiled car has started the electrification journey, it will be the first Lamborghini featuring hybrid technology. This phase will also see the launch of two new cars in the V12 model line-up which will be announced in 2021.
II. Hybrid transition (by the end of 2024): In 2023, Lamborghini is expected to launch its first hybrid series production car, and by the end of 2024, the entire range will be electrified. Performance and excellent driving experience will remain the focus, and in this phase with the company's engineers and technicians will be developing new technologies, and the application of lightweight carbon fiber materials will be crucial in compensating for weight due to electrification. The internal target for this phase is to reduce product CO2 emissions by 50 percent by the beginning of 2025.
III. First fully-electric Lamborghini: In the second half of the decade the company efforts will be dedicated to full-electric vehicles, with the vision of a fourth model in the future.
The luxury automaker has stressed iut will remain focused on top product performance -- the absolute priority throughout the entire electrification program.
