Bengaluru-based Nsure to foray into lithium-ion cell manufacturing; 1GWh plant set to come up in Karnataka

Nsure Energy and International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) signed an agreement for Technical Know-How Transfer and Training in November 2021 to support indigenization efforts.

Bengaluru-based Nsure Reliable Power Solutions (Nsure) on Wednesday announced it will soon be entering into lithium-ion cell manufacturing in India with an initial production capacity of 1 GWh.

With an investment of more than INR 1000 crores, Nsure's plant producing LFP (lithium iron phosphate) pouch cells will be established on 80 acres of land in Malur, Bengaluru, with a provision to expand the gigafactory up to 5GWh or more in the next phase.

"Nsure's full-fledged Li-ion cell manufacturing pilot unit will be ready soon and we are planning to start operations by the end of October this year," stated Chandrakanth Ramalingam, Founder and CEO of Nsure in an official release provided by NewsVoir.

"In line with the Prime Minister's vision of AtmaNirbhar Bharat, Nsure and International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, have entered into an agreement for technical know-how transfer and training to support indigenization efforts," Ramalingam added.

According to reports, Nsure has selected LFP chemistry given its suitability for tropical Indian climatic conditions. Further, LFP batteries offer greater thermal stability, lower risk of explosion and affordable price range over NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) batteries.

"As our cells will not contain rare earth metals such as nickel or cobalt, this reduces risk of fire significantly and it mitigates the environmental impact of used end-of-life cells," Ramalingam said.

"Our approach will be aimed at making a li-ion cell used for various applications in order to minimize the overall cost per cycle and increase the energy density at pack level."
