Indian RE major Greenko has signed an MoU with the Government of Tamil Nadu to construct three pumped-hydro energy storage projects totalling a cumulative capacity of 3,300 MW in the state. The said projects are to come up in the districts of Tirupathur, Salem and Tiruvannamalai.
Group President and JMD Mahesh Kolli signed the MoU with the Government of Tamil Nadu in the presence of state Chief Minister MK Stalin. Greenko Group CEO and MD Anil Chalamalasetty, Minister of Industries of Tamil Nadu Dr. TRB Rajaa, and the officials of the Guidance Tamil Nadu, the investment arm of the state, were also present.
More details on the pumped energy storage projects and their respective costs and timelines for operationalization are awaited. As part of its energy transition and decarbonization goals for India, Greenko has claimed that it is building 100+ GWh of 'Connected Digitized Cloud Storage' enabled through integrated pumped storage projects across the nation.
It is to be noted that Greenko is the company behind India's largest pumped storage project that is coming up in Madhya Pradesh. The project, located in the Khemla block of Neemuch district, has a capacity of 1.44 GW with energy storage for 7.5 hours. The project is also being expanded to 1.92 GW to support buffer storage for 6 hours or 11 GWh daily.
With 7.5 GW of installed renewable energy capacity across hydro, solar, and wind portfolios, Greenko currently has presence in 15 Indian states. By 2025, about 50 GWh of energy storage projects are expected to be online.
Furthermore, an additional 50 GWh of storage are scheduled for the ensuing years, bringing the total storage capacity under the company's fold to 100 GWh. The company is working on a cloud-based platform to digitally manage these energy assets.
