The Government of Delhi NCT has announced a whooping subsidy of ₹ 5,500 each for the first 10,000 buyers of e-cycles in the city. An additional subsidy of ₹ 2,000 awaits the first 1,000 buyers, according to Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot.
Further, the Delhi government is also subsidizing heavy-duty e-cycles meant for cargo delivery and e-carts for commercial applications. The first 5,000 cargo e-cycle buyers are entitled for ₹ 15,000 on their purchase, according to news reports.
Gahlot has also reportedly declared that a subsidy of ₹ 30,000 will be offered to corporate buyers of e-carts as well, as only individual buyers were considered for subsidy earlier. All the subsidies on EVs are applicable to the residents of Delhi only.
Chief Minister Aravind Kejriwal tweeted, "Congrats Delhi! Today we are taking one more important step in the fight against pollution. Delhi Govt's hugely successful e-vehicle subsidy policy is being enhanced with a subsidy for electric bicycles today. E-cycles will help Delhiites reduce the use of polluting vehicles".
In this regard, the operational guidelines for buyers and EV models qualifying for the scheme will be issued in the next two weeks, according to Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission, the policy think tank of the Delhi government.
With this move, Delhi becomes the first state in India to offer direct subsidies to the e-cycle segment. The e-cycles are simply electrified bicycles that can travel around 45 kilometers on a single charge with a speed of about 25 kmph.
