Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) on Monday (August 28) announced that it will enter battery manufacturing ecosystem with LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery solutions and will set up its battery giga factory by 2026.
Speaking at the 46th Annual General Meeting, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of RIL announced a slew of plans including RIL's plans for the new energy and battery manufacturing portfolio.
"We will start with LFP chemistry which has been proven at scale for its safety, stability, and life, targeting to produce LFP-based solutions at world beating lifecycle costs," Ambani said at the AGM.
"Simultaneously, we are focused on fast-track commercialization of our sodium-ion battery technology. We will build on our technology leadership position by industrializing sodium-ion cell production at megawatt level by 2025, and rapidly scale up to giga scale thereafter."
In June 2021, the company announced its plans to build four giga factories at the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Manufacturing Complex at Jamnagar, Gujarat. First, for integrated solar photovoltaic module factory to produce solar energy; second, an advanced energy storage battery factory for the storage of intermittent energy; third, an electrolyzer factory to produce green hydrogen; and lastly, a fuel cell factory for converting hydrogen into mobile and stationary power.
RIL's battery giga factory will manufacture battery chemicals, cells and packs, leading all the way up to containerized energy storage solutions. The giga factory will also include a battery recycling facility to support circular economy.
Green Hydrogen
Speaking of the progress made in green hydrogen, RIL chairman stated it will be setting up a fully integrated giga-scale electrolyzer manufacturing facility. This will enable large-scale green hydrogen production at Jamnagar and gradually transition for captive requirements. The company plans to integrate it with green ammonia and green methanol production for domestic and international markets.
