UK-based Intelligent Energy has unveiled its latest hydrogen fuel cell system - 'IE-DRIVE 100' - for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs). The system in a compact, engine shaped format provides a net peak power up to 110kW.

The 'IE-DRIVE' hydrogen fuel cell stack at the heart of the system can deliver 155 kW of zero-emission power, making it one of the most powerful fuel cell stacks integrated into passenger cars, according to the manufacturer.

The system has been designed as a series of connected modules to provide flexibility for integration into different vehicles. IE's direct water injection cooling system enables a more compact stack design as well as reducing the size of the heat exchanger, the company added.

Commenting on the development, Greg Harris, Chief Commercial Officer at Intelligent Energy, said, "This is such an exciting time for us at IE. We've already delivered the first IE-DRIVE 100 for system fit in Changan's SUV, and now have 3 systems in test before the start of vehicle track trials."

The project development is supported by the Advanced Propulsion Centre, and the project partner Changan UK is said to be integrating the first DRIVE 100 system into an SUV that will be tested later this year.

Located in Loughborough, Intelligent Energy is focused on the development of lightweight hydrogen fuel cell solutions ranging from 800W to 300kW+ for customers in the automotive, aerospace, generator, telecoms, materials handling and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sectors.
