India's Oil and Gas major, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has signed an agreement with Taiwan-based battery-swapping solutions provider, Gogoro to roll out battery-swapping stations across India.

Through the latest partnership, HPCL aims to address challenges related to range anxiety, rapid refueling, safety, and affordability as electric vehicle adoption picks up in India. HPCL has more than 21,000 retail outlets across the country.

"India is in the early stages of a massive electric transformation of its urban two-wheel transportation system and it is increasingly evident that battery swapping is a critical component to broad adoption, so building out the swapping infrastructure is crucial," said Horace Luke, founder, and CEO of Gogoro.

"Gogoro is joining together with the Indian business community and national and local governments to deploy a battery swapping and electric vehicle ecosystem that is open, accessible, and scalable," he added.

As per statistics, the total EV sales in India as of Sept. 2023 stood at 29,50,563, of which electric two-wheelers made up 16,07,567. Further, Gogoro has established itself as a leader in battery-swapping technology for electric two-wheelers globally, with approximately 500 swaps to date.

The Maharashtra State Government and Taiwanese EV battery swapping infrastructure provider, Gogoro Inc. (Gogoro) have entered into an 'Ultra Mega Project' agreement to manufacture vehicles, smart battery packs, and battery swap stations and deploy an open and accessible battery swapping infrastructure in the state beginning late 2023.
