Origin picks Fluence for 300 MW battery at Mortlake project in Australia

Origin Energy has selected Fluence to deliver a 300 MW / 650 MWh battery at its Mortlake Power Station in southwest Victoria.

The energy storage system is anticipated to be commissioned in late 2026, with the project undergoing detailed design and procurement activity, after which site preparation and civil works will commence.

Located in Victoria's South West Renewable Energy Zone, the battery energy storage system (BESS) will store excess power generated during periods of high renewable output for discharge during peak demand.

USA-headquarterd Fluence Energy is a global leader in energy storage products and services, and optimization software for renewables and storage. Earlier this month, the company announced it had crossed 20 GWh of deployed and contracted energy storage systems globally, calling the figure an "industry-leading milestone".

The Mortlake Power Station will use Fluence's Gridstack energy storage product with a 15-year service agreement, as well as Fluence's AI-powered asset performance management (APM) software Nispera to optimise the battery's operational performance.
