European green H2 firm Lhyfe has announced the groundbreaking of a yet another hydrogen production plant in Germany, located at Brake (Unterweser) in Lower Saxony region. The site is close to the seaport run by Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts), the largest public seaport operator in the country.
The company claims the upcoming facility with an installed electrolysis capacity of 10 MW will be the "first in the northern German region" to make green hydrogen to the wider market in the European region and beyond.
The plant will produce up to 1,150 tons of green hydrogen per year, powered by the electricity sourced from wind and solar photovoltaic plants in the country, through corporate PPAs. Potential offtakers would include various industrial and mobility applications, Lhyfe adds.

"We are delighted to be able to realise this 10 MW project. It demonstrates the economic viability of hydrogen solutions in the transport and industrial sectors and supports the state of Lower Saxony in its ambitious goals of building a nationwide hydrogen infrastructure", commented Luc Graré, Head of Central & Eastern Europe at Lhyfe.
The port of Brake offers ideal conditions for the construction of green hydrogen plants, he noted. "With this project, we are also driving value creation in the region. The local availability of green hydrogen will create new jobs and companies in the region will benefit from affordable clean hydrogen", Graré said.
The project will play a major role in decarbonizing the industrial port complex and maritime transport in the Lower Saxony region, according to Lhyfe. The project also represents the market ramp-up of green hydrogen embedded in the region's local value creation.
It is to be noted that Lhyfe recently announced the start of construction of the largest hydrogen production plant in Baden-Württemberg, in Schwäbisch Gmünd, with ground-breaking happening in October last year. Two other sites in France were inaugurated in December 2023, while several other sites are currently under construction in France, Germany and Sweden.
