Leading European green hydrogen producer and supplier, Lhyfe, has started the construction work for building the largest commercial green hydrogen production plant in Germany.

Located in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg, the plant is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2024 and produce about 1000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year based on 10MW installed capacity. The hydrogen produced at the site will be used partly in the "H2-Aspen" industrial park and at a JET H2 hydrogen filling station.

"The project demonstrates the economic viability of hydrogen solutions in the transport and industry sectors and also supports the state of Baden-Württemberg in its efforts to become a model region for the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure," said Luc Graré, Head of Central & Eastern Europe at Lhyfe.

In January 2022, Lhyfe along with JET H2 formed a joint venture for the construction of the hydrogen filling station in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The project, funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the EU, among others, aims to support sustainable neighborhood solutions for the local industry. This project, which is part of the HyFIVE (Hydrogen For Innovative Vehicles) project, is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through a €6.4 grant agreement.

Germany is looking to develop the Schwäbisch Gmünd into a model region for the nationwide development of hydrogen and filling station network as a central supply infrastructure. On completion, the Schwäbisch Gmünd green hydrogen plant will be the largest hydrogen producer in the State.

For Lhyfe, this project marks its first large green hydrogen plant outside of France. Last year, the company inaugurated the world's first offshore green hydrogen production pilot system. And, in 2021, Lhyfe inaugurated the world's first industrial green hydrogen production site in direct connection with a windfarm.
