In a bid to elevate the German-engineered e-mobility experience in China, Mercedes-Benz Group China and BMW Brilliance Automotive have reached an agreement to establish a 50:50 JV to operate a high-power charging network for the ease of Chinese customers.

First set of charging stations are planned to be ready by 2024 in select locations. The JV aims to establish a network of at least 1,000 high-power charging stations with around 7,000 high-power charging piles by the end of 2026, according to the companies.

They further claim that both the brands will apply their expertise gained from global and Chinese charging operations, informed by an in-depth understanding of the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) market, to deliver fast, convenient, reliable and tailor-made charging solutions.

Customers of Mercedes-Benz Group and BMW Group EVs will be able to enjoy a series of exclusive features including plug-and-charge and online reservation for a seamless digital experience, they add.

Tesla install 10,000 EV Superchargers in China -

Tesla has installed its 10,000th supercharger for electric vehicle charging in China at Shanghai yesterday. With this, the US company has a cumulative count of more than 1,500 supercharging stations and more than 700 destination charging stations in the Chinese mainland

Further, the JV aspires to use electricity generated from renewable sources, wherever possible, to create a sustainable and eco-friendly charging experience.

China boasts the world's largest public charging infrastructure at present, with nearly 1.8 million EV chargers available for users in 2022.

Given the stiff competition faced by the European brand in China in the EV space, especially from local manufacturers and Tesla, a joint EV charging network for two of the popular German brands will be a strategic step in the right direction.

It is to be noted that early this year, Mercedes-Benz announced its far-reaching plans to launch a global high-power charging network across North America, Europe, China and other key markets.
