GM EV users can now access over 17,800 Tesla Superchargers in North America
General Motors (GM) has now enabled access to more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers for its electric vehicle (EV) customers. Drivers will have to use of a GM approved North American Charging Standard (NACS) DC adapter, which will first be made available to customers in the United States, followed by customers in Canada later this year.
With this move, GM customers will have access to more than 231,800 public Level 2 and DC fast chargers in North America, a significant feat that is likely to accelerate fast and convenient charging options for the brand's current and future EV users.
The brand's EV charging points are also growing as GM continues to help accelerate the deployment of infrastructure in communities and heavily-traveled corridors through its various charging collaborations including EVgo and Ionna joint venture.
"GM's ongoing efforts to help accelerate the expansion of public charging infrastructure is an integral part of our commitment to an all-electric future," said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy. The company has taken more than 15 months to operationalize the grant of access to Tesla chargers.
"Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless", he added.
Customers in US will have to purchase NACS DC adapter from GM for about $225. They can use the company's apps to seamlessly locate available Tesla Superchargers, check station status, initiate a charge, and pay for charging sessions.
For the ease of customers, GM is also planning to leveraging multiple suppliers to produce approved NACS DC adapters, which is indeed the SAE J3400 fast charging plug.
