Toshiba India to expand transformer capacity, focus on 400 KV / 765 KV units

Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Pvt Ltd (TTDI) announced plans to increase the company's manufacturing capacity for power transformers and distribution transformers by 150 percent compared to FY23 levels. The new capacities will serve both the domestic and export markets, the company said.

The expansion will take place over a three-year period and conclude in FY26, the company announced in a press release, adding that Japanese parent Toshiba Group had positioned the power T&D business as a 'focus business' and would invest a little over ₹500 crore for the additional capacities.

TTDI said it would increase assembly and test line capacity for distribution transformers and power transformers, which serve transmission grids and distribution networks.

The enhanced testing capacity for power transformers would be geared specifically towards expanding exports and meeting the high demand for 400 KV / 765 KV transformers in the Indian market, the company said.

In the case of distribution transformers, expansion would mainly be in the creation of a CRGO (cold-rolled grain oriented) steel processing center that would enhance vertical integration and help TTDI reduce the process lead time while enhancing quality and safety.

Additionally, TTDI will also build a new manufacturing facility for surge arresters during the first half of FY24, with the products becoming commercially available in the market by the second half of the year, the company said.

Hiroshi Furuta, Chairperson and Managing Director, TTDI said in a statement: "With India established as a hub for our T&D equipment manufacturing operations and export base, TTDI has successfully supplied India-made transformers to over 50 countries. Furthering our commitment to Make-in-India and Export-from-India, the new investment will improve operational efficiency, increase speed-to-market, and support in expanding our business in India and overseas."
