Morrow Batteries signs pact with Ukrainian state agency for LFP batteries

Norwegian battery firm Morrow Batteries recently signed an MoU with the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine (SAEE) regarding possible supply with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery cells for battery energy storage systems (BESS) to strengthen the Ukrainian energy system. 

The European nation is battering with frequent blackouts and irregular power supply due to the continued Russian attacks. The country is in direct need of stable power to continue to protect its civilian population and maintain the security of Ukrainian society. 

The current power crisis has pushed the country to build a distributed BESS grid. Ukraine has a significant need for batteries over the next years to help stabilize its energy system, claims Morrow Batteries, adding that potential deliveries may reach GWh levels, although the exact volumes are yet to be agreed. 

"We are honoured to have been chosen as one of the preferred partners to deliver our LFP battery cells for BESS solutions to Ukraine, and by this, we can somewhat reduce the suffering of the Ukrainian people by reducing power blackouts", said Lars Christian Bacher, CEO of Morrow Batteries. 

We share a great sense of urgency and will do our part in being ready to sign a firm offtake agreement with relevant authorities in Ukraine and are ready to start deliveries of battery cells from the first quarter of 2025", he added. 

Head of Ukrainian agency SAEE Anna Zamazeeva said, "Securing stable power supply is important for Ukraine, and President Zelensky has defined it as a task for the government to establish energy storage facilities in every school and hospital as soon as possible". 

"This underlines the need to build a strong battery value chain in Europe. Access to batteries produced by European vendors is a critical factor for building less vulnerable grids and ensuring batteries for mobile solutions", she added. 

The need for BESS system is urgent, therefore the parties have affirmed to work closely to mature the MoU agreement as soon as possible. The final contract will be awarded based on future autonomous negotiations and may involve external financial donors, scientific research institutions and organizations, government and other funds, according to the parties. 

It is to be noted that LFP Morrow's battery cells will be produced at the recently opened facility in Arendal, Norway, along with the upcoming battery gigafactory in Arendal.
