MOL Group set to begin production at one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant

Hungarian multinational oil and gas company, MOL Group has announced that they will start the production of green hydrogen at MOL's 10-megawatt capacity Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta, Hungary – making it the largest green hydrogen plant in Central and Eastern Europe.

The €22 million investment is in line with MOL Group's "SHAPE TOMORROW" corporate strategy that aims to make the region more sustainable, competitive, and self-sufficient. With the new plant beginning operations, MOL Group expects to make hydrogen production more sustainable, reducing Danube Refinery's carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tonnes (the equivalent of taking 5,500 vehicles off the road overnight).

"MOL will be able to produce 1,600 tonnes of clean, carbon-neutral green hydrogen per year which opens a new chapter in hydrogen economy," MOL Group said in a social media post.

Leading its industrial decarbonization efforts forward, the MOL Group intends to take the technology to the other two fuel production units of the group, after the success of the Danube Refinery plant to ensure a more sustainable fuel production process at each of the MOL Group's refineries.

In April 2022, MOL joined forces with Plug Power to secure a 10MW electrolysis unit for the plant.
