Ohmium launches 2 GW PEM electrolyzer facility near Bengaluru for India and export markets

Green hydrogen company Ohmium International has launched a PEM electrolyzer plant at Doddaballapura near Bengaluru.

The plant built at an investment of ₹2,000 crore, was inaugurated by Union minister of new and renewable energy, Pralhad Joshi.

The plant has capacity for 2 GW of fully assembled Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer systems and production space of 14,000 square meters, the company said in a press release. It will cater to the India as well as export markets.

Arne Ballantine, CEO, Ohmium said in a release: "2GW of electrolyzers can abate four million tonnes of CO2 per year – equivalent to the CO2 captured by 180 million trees. And for us it's just the beginning."

Ashwin Varma, COO, Ohmium explained: "Ohmium's unique hyper modular PEM electrolyzers are designed for mass production and easy assembly."

"By implementing the best practices of standardized, high quality and efficient manufacturing, we can build systems that achieve superior performance at a very competitive cost," Varma said, adding: "With this standardized approach, our factory production can scale up quickly to meet growing demand, with additional cost savings as capacity expands."

Ohmium, which recently received an investment from US company 3M, had in April 2024 signed a collaborated with Tata Projects to work on green hydrogen projects in India.

Under their agreement, Ohmium will supply PEM electrolyzers while Tata Projects will be responsible for engineering, design, integration, and optimization aspects of the projects.

In 2023, the company announced it had been selected as the PEM electrolyzer partner of NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd for a two-year period ending May 2025.
