IESW 2024: EV powertrain, components offer vendors 'opportunity for a decade'

You can't have an EV revolution without support from the EV components sector. In that sense, the EV powertrain and components manufacturing sub-sectors offer 'an opportunity for a decade', as the panel at the India Energy Storage Week concluded. 

Moderated by Dr Rahul Walawalkar, President & MD, CES India & President, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), the panel deliberated on indigenous powertrain development & manufacturing, advanced powertrain materials, battery management systems, etc. 

Sharan Aiyappa, OEM Director - Sales & Marketing, MacDermid spoke on the importance of thermal protection as a source of battery safety.  

Vikas Aggarwal, Managing Director, Ipower Batteries, pointed out the extraordinary differences in climate in India, and the need for educating people about the C-rate and its practical implications. 

Rajiv Kumar Singh, R&D Lead- Platform, Hero MotoCorp, pointed out that batteries can account for as much as 50 percent of the metal costs in an electric two-wheeler, and listed the safety features Hero implements in its vehicles, starting from design to recycling.    

Vinay Solanki, Business Head, Nash Tech Labs, claimed the cost of cylindrical cells for India was now better than China, although certain components still need to come from China, and stressed on the importance of integrated players with one stop shop capability in the battery space.  

Sebastian Weyermann, Sr. Business Development Manager-CMD, Thermofisher Scientific, joined online and spoke on how to make battery production more effieicent by detecting impurities before the production starts.
