IESW 2024: India needs fast deployment of fast chargers, after mapping for best location

Considering EV charging infrastructure as a key enabler for mass adoption of electric vehicles in India, the IESW 2024 discussed on the critical challenges behind the expansion of EV charging infrastructure at present and key learnings from the existing charging installation so far in the country. 

The session moderated by Gurusharan Dhillon, Director - Electric Mobility, IESA & CES, also dealt with the existing policy support for the charging infrastructure.  

Awadhesh Jha, Executive Director, GLIDA, spoke on the need to improve charging infrastructure in India and the need for ' best location mapping' before setting up charging stations. 

Vikas Almadi, Chairman and Managing Director, VNT, spoke from the power management side, and pointed out the lack of power sector electronics. "We are trying to get engineering trained to a level where they can deliver designs fit for India that are power efficient as well," he said. 

Jagjit Singh, Director of BD, APAC and Global Markets, EVOS Energy Pty, spoke on the need for enhanced government support to boost deployment of charging infrastructure across the country.  

Vivekanand Kumar of Exicom explained how localization is helping keep cost down, but added that creating competencies in both, right product and right price would be a challenge for market players. 

Varun Shahani, General Manager-Head Energy Infrastructure, Hero MotoCorp, outlined a vision for seamless EV charging in India. "Range anxiety is actually more charging anxiety and charging time anxiety. The consumer wants chargers that charge fast and offer a longer range," he told the audience.
